SALT SYSTEMS
Why are salt water pools becoming so popular?
No more faded bathing suits and your wife’s hair will not be damaged. Most important you do not need to store gallons of chlorine anymore. The water also feels very soft on your skin and you don’t feel like you’re in a chemical bath. Most people with chlorine sensitivity generally do not have a problem with the low chlorine levels in a salt pool.
How does a salt system work?
A salt system generally has two pieces, a control unit and a cell. The control unit sends electricity to a series of plates with opposite charges inside the cell. As water passes through the cell electrolysis takes place. This process converts the salt in the water to a softer chlorine (HOCL).
Is it like swimming in the ocean?
No, the ocean has about 35,000 parts per million (ppm) of salt in the water. Your pool will have around 3,000 ppm of salt. To give you a good comparison your tear drop has around 7,000 ppm of salt. A salt water system is almost tasteless, depending on the individual’s salt sensitivity.
Is there a down side to a salt water pool?
Most people would say no, but some pool owners have experienced problems with their pH level rising. This can be controlled by checking your pH weekly and adding the proper amount of chemicals. Others say that it is the initial cost of a salt system. The salt system will pay for itself in 2 to 3 years, plus you get those years of chlorine free swimming.
Can it be installed with my existing system?
Yes, the water is still considered fresh water and is compatible with almost all pool components. The only one that I know that is not compatible is the Pentair Nautilus Stainless Steel Filter. We will still check with your pool equipment manufacture.
How do I add salt?
We add granular pool salt to the pool according to the manufactures instructions. Most manufactures recommend adding it to the deep end of the pool. Most pools only need salt added once or twice a year.
Are salt systems hard to maintain?
No, most systems are maintenance free; they only need to be cleaned once a season. The salt systems are cleaned by a muriatic acid solution, but check your system for the manufactures recommendation. If you have any more questions about a Salt System for your pool or for a FREE estimate call.
